The St. Charles Parish Public Works Department is spearheading a 10-week cleanup project of the Airline Highway borrow pit canal. Parts of the canal are blocked by water lilies and other vegetation, decreasing the amount of water that would be stored or flowed through the canal. Marsh buggies, excavators and mud boats will be scooping out vegetation and clearing the canal from Interstate 3-10 to the Cross Bayou area. This cleanup will provide quicker drainage for the Destrehan and St. Rose areas, with water moving from subdivisions south of Airline to its final outfall at the Hurricane Protection Levees drainage structures and into the LaBranche Wetlands.
