US and Canadian officials have formalized a deal in which two conservation groups will donate $9.4 million to protect the land around Glacier National Park. The US Department of Interior says British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell will introduce legislation to permanently ban oil, gas and minerals development on Canada's side of the Flathead River Basin. Nature Conservancy Canada and The Nature Conservancy in the US have agreed to split the cost for British Columbia to compensate two Canadian mining companies for what they spent in exploration. Negotiations had been in the works since Campbell and Gov. Brian Schweitzer agreed last year to prohibit future development in the 9000-square-mile (23310-square-kilometer) basin. Schweitzer first announced the deal Monday US, Canadian and Nature Conservancy officials attended a Washington ceremony marking the deal.
